Power of the 2024 R 18 Roctane

At the heart of the new BMW R 18 Roctane lies a powerful 1,802-cc boxer engine, carrying forward the rich legacy of BMW Motorrad's motorcycles since their inception in 1923, hailing from Munich and Berlin-Spandau. The engine maintains its impressive performance figures, delivering 91 hp at 4,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 116 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm, with over 110 lb-ft. of torque available between 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. With a maximum engine speed of 5,750 rpm, this air/oil cooled motor showcases a vertically split aluminum construction, weighing a combined 244 lbs. alongside the transmission. Setting it apart from the classic air-cooled two-valve boxer engines of BMW Motorrad, the R 18 motor's forged crankshaft incorporates an additional center main bearing to counteract undesirable bending vibrations caused by the engine's substantial cylinder volume.

BMW R 18 Roctane Design

The new BMW R 18 Roctane effortlessly embodies the characteristics of a cruiser and a bagger, seamlessly bridging the gap between the two styles. Its striking appearance is accentuated by the larger 21-inch front wheel, complemented by the 18-inch rear wheel and mid-rise handlebars, lending the R 18 Roctane a purposeful and determined aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the timeless air/oil-cooled BMW boxer models of yesteryears, this design language is apparent in several key elements. The engine takes center stage, symbolizing the heart of the motorcycle. The double-loop frame, exposed drive shaft, and rigid-style rear contribute to the distinctive tapered streamliner design envisioned by BMW Motorrad. Meticulous attention to detail is evident throughout the R 18 Roctane, showcasing the brand's commitment to craftsmanship. Emphasizing its classic heritage, the R 18 Roctane boasts metal body parts that exude a sense of timeless elegance. The 4.2-gallon fuel tank, with its graceful teardrop shape, pays homage to the iconic R 5 model. Steel is also utilized in the construction of the front and rear fenders, fork covers, and headlight housing, further highlighting the dedication to both durability and authentic design cues.

Riding Modes of the R 18 Roctane

The BMW R 18 Roctane comes with convenient standard features like keyless start and Riding Modes. With Keyless Ride, riders can securely keep the key in their pocket, eliminating the need for physical key handling. Continuing the tradition, the R 18 Roctane offers the well-known trio of riding modes: "Rain," "Roll," and "Rock," providing riders with familiar options to suit different riding conditions. Additionally, standard features like Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Engine Drag Control further enhance riding safety, ensuring a high level of stability and control on the road. Modes include:

  • Rain mode: control characteristics of ASC and engine drag control allow for a more slippery road surface to achieve a very high level of riding safety. Also in rain mode, throttle response is gentler.
  • Road mode: this mode offers optimum throttle response, while ASC and engine drag control are set to achieve ideal performance on all roads.
  • Rock mode: When in rock mode, rider can explore the full dynamic potential of the bike. Throttle response is very spontaneous and direct.
