Complete Pre-Ride Checklist
Before each ride, go down this check list! That way you know you will have done everything you can do stay safe:
- Oil -Too little or too much oil can have a negative impact on your bike. So always make sure that the right quantity of oil is in the engine, gearbox and drive.
- Air Pressure - Proper air pressure is one of the most important bases for safe motorcycle riding.
- Lights - Lights are also critical for your safety. Before you head out check the headlight, low beam, high beam, brake lights and turn signals.
- All Levers - Make sure all four levers - the clutch and the hand brake, foot brake and shift gears - are working flawlessly, including.
- You and Your Gear - Make sure you feel ok, have mental clarity, and are fit for a ride. Then, make sure your helmet is in good shape, and that you have the proper protective clothing for that day's weather
- Weather and Route - Knowing where you are going and what weather you will face is key for safety!
Check Weather Before Your Ride
Every biker knows that the first thing you should do before you go anywhere is to check the weather. This is very much just a part of the routine, but we wanted to double down, and ensure that every time you ride, you’re fully prepared for the kind of weather that you could potentially run into. It’s important to remember that while you have your own needs in terms of temperature, your engine and tires have different operating temperatures that should be considered, too. You want to be paying special attention to the wind gusts that you’ll be dealing with, as no one wants to ride around while simply be pushed around by strong gusts. Remember to always dress for safety, along with warmth!
Track Your Motorcycle Route
Should you be going somewhere specific, it might do you some extra good to check the route you’re headed before you even leave. Many apps these days come with traffic alert so you can see if there are any roads you might want to avoid, and some even tell you if construction is happening. This could be a good way to avoid sitting in traffic for too long, and to instead seek an alternative route. There are even BMW Motorrad navigators that can help you with navigation if you are off-roading.
Check Your BMW Motorcycle's Lights
Your BMW should be in the best working order possible whenever you go out driving. One of the top aspects of your motorcycle that you should be consistently checking is the lights. This includes the headlight, low beam, high beam, turn signals, and brake lights. BMW only installs the highest quality parts, but it’s still vital that you spend the time with them to make sure they are functioning how they should. This is even more important whenever you are driving at night, as the lack of a headlight is especially dangerous.
Check Levers
Motorcycles are unique rides, and with them come things that regular road-worthy vehicles don’t have to necessarily consider. You will want to ensure that the clutch and brake controls, for both your hands and your feet, are working flawlessly. These adjustable levers make every single ride more enjoyable than the last, and you want to make sure that you are getting the most out of them.
