Continue reading below to learn the steps to get your motorcycle license in Ohio!

1. What is the first step in getting an Ohio Motorcycle License?

Before diving into the first step, it's important to mention that Ohio has three different motorcycle endorsements: two-wheel, three-wheel, and motor scooter. The first step to getting your motor license is to obtain a Motorcycle Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). To get a TIPIC, you must be a minimum of 15 years, six months of age and pass a motorcycle knowledge test and vision exam. To prepare for this test, we recommend studying the Ohio Motorcycle Operator's Manual along with section four of the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. Once you feel ready for the exam, go to any driver exam station to take the motorcycle knowledge test. When you go for your test, you must provide your full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number.

2. How do you get your TIPIC?

Once you pass the knowledge test and vision test, you may proceed to a deputy registrar license agency to purchase the TIPIC within sixty days of passing the test. Be sure you're able to present your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, proof of Ohio residency, and proof of citizenship. If you're an applicant under the age of 18, you must have a parent or guardian present a valid driver's license to co-sign for the TIPIC. If you happen to fail the knowledge test, you must wait a minimum of 24 hours before your next attempt. In Ohio, there is no limit on the number of times you can take the knowledge test. Once you have your TIPIC, there are restrictions you must follow. These include carrying the TIPIC at all times while riding, only riding during daylight hours, no passengers, no highways or high-traffic areas, and wearing a helmet and protective eyewear at all times. Getting your TIPIC says that you are allowed to operate a motorcycle to learn, provided that the aforementioned restrictions are followed.

3) Is there a Skills Test Required for a Motorcycle License?

The TIPIC is a prerequisite for your motorcycle license, think of it as a learners permit. The TIPIC is valid for one year from the date of purchase, and if it expires, you must apply for another one before getting your license. If you're 18 or older, when you feel ready, it's time to schedule your skills test, which takes place on a course away from any roads. At the time of testing, you must present a valid TIPIC and have the proper gear at the time of testing. Further, your motorcycle must be street-legal and in safe operating condition. If you fail any part of the skills test, you must wait at least one week before retesting. Once you pass, you may go to a deputy registrar to purchase your motorcycle license before your TIPIC expires. If you are under the age of 18, you must complete the probationary driver license requirements, which include holding the TIPIC for a minimum of six months, completing driver education, completing 50 hours of driving, with at least ten hours at night, and complete a motorcycle safety course. At the end of the Motorcycle Ohio Basic Course, you'll receive a completion card that is valid to waive the motorcycle skills test for 60 days from the date of completion. After passing, you must purchase your license or endorsement within 60 days or before your TIPIC expires, whichever comes first. When you go to purchase your license, a parent or guardian must co-sign for it.
