Tips for Winter Motorcycle Riding

Riding comfortably in cold weather begins with the correct gear choice, and it’s all about layering. A proper base Layer is a critical step to riding in the winter. Base layers allow our skin to breathe, wicking away moisture. This helps sweat evaporate rather than drawing heat away from our bodies. Next is your outer gear. You want to choose a jacket and cover paints that are waterproof and breathable. Good waterproof boots are also essential to keep your feet warm and dry. There are two gloves I swear by for winter riding, a short cuff style like the traditional skier gloves. Next is a neck warmer and a tightly-sealed helmet with a fog-free face shield. Fog-free is absolutely necessary. 

Decking your bike out for winter riding may not look the best, but it is vital! The basics needed for cold-weather riding are aimed around protection agist the elements, such as a huge windscreen and handguards. Adventure-style riding pegs are also a great addition, as they provide optimal grip regardless of how slick conditions get.

Also, if your bike is water-cooled, make sure the antifreeze is fresh, and it's mixed properly. Also, make sure all hoses are in great shape. Cold weather means colder tires, and as everyone should know, cold tires equate to limited traction. Riding helps increase heat in the tire, but even the briefest stop can quickly cool the tires down, providing a lack of traction. Also, ensure you have adequate tread on your tires for winter riding. It may snow, and you’ll need to channel water/snow more than ever on wet and cold roads. Finally, don’t forget to check your tire pressure.
